I have a client who was defrauded of over a quarter million dollars by an insurance agent who had, sine 1988, some 53 arrests, 144 charges, and a multitude of convictions for theft, drugs, assault, escape from confinement and more. In the course of representing her I found out that the Maryland Insurance administration doesn’t do criminal background checks on licensee applicants like most other states. I sent a message to Doug J.J. Peters via Facebook today about his interest in working with my client to introduce legislation to have the MIA do a background check and have the applicant pay for it. If the MIA had done that a few years back I can think of at least one elderly woman who would still have her retirement savings. Hopefully Sen. Peters will follow up.
