What’s worse than a car accident where your car is totalled? A fine from the Department of Motor Vehicles for having an uninsured car because you forgot to turn in your car’s license plates when you cancelled the insurance on the totalled car. Maryland has a $150.00 fine, plus an additional $5.00 per day over 30 days, for having a registered but uninsured car. Make sure that you keep your license plates and turn them back in to the DMV before you cancel your car insurance. If you forget, most of the time the vehicle gets re-registered and the DMV can determine when you sold the car. However, if the car is never reregistered, because it is shipped out of state or used for parts, the DMV can’t determne that you didn’t simply have an uninsured car. Then they fine you.
