Jack & Leslie Johnson, Speed Cameras, and Prince George’s County Corruption

Mark Twain once said our only native criminal class was Congress. He never met some of our elected officials from Prince George’s County. Was anyone surprised that former county executive Jack Johnson and his wife, councilwoman Leslie Johnson were convicted on corruption charges? As a life-long resident of Prince George’s County I understand many people feel that there is a money culture of pay-to-play in our County. The speed cameras are another example of our governmental corruption. Our elected officials know that these cameras are inaccurate and malfunction but are too in love with the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue to abolish their use. Until we stop putting criminals like the Johnsons and Andre Hornsby in positions of power which control millions of dollars we the tax payers will continue to be abused. Our local jurisdictons insist on having the speed cameras operated by private businesses who have a financial incentive to issue tickets because they get paid a percentage of every ticket issued. Thus the speed camera programs are tainted by the foul whiff of back-room deals, corruption, and mulit-million dollar stakes. I will not be surprised when the next Prince George’s County corruption conviction relates to the speed camera programs.
